Happy Thanksgiving! Are you caught up in the holiday craze and suddenly finding yourself responsible for making a feast for a large family or social gathering and you have no idea where to even begin? Well, hold your feathers because I have a scrumptious traditional Thanksgiving recipe just for you! Let's begin the tasting.
The dish I am sharing with you today is a classic roast turkey and gravy.
This recipe should take you about 4-5 hours to make. But don't let this daunting cooking time scare you! This recipe is beginner-friendly.
For a delicious and beautiful turkey, we first need the following ingredients. Feel free to pause the video while you gather the ingredients.
Now onto the actual cooking: Step 1 is to preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey. Step 2, grab a small bowl and mix melted butter with kosher salt, black pepper, and poultry seasoning. Toss the chopped onions, celery, and carrots onto a large roasting pan with the neck and giblets and add a bay leaf. Fill the pan with about 1/2 inch of water. Step 3, placing the turkey on the vegetables, loosen the skin over the turkey breast with your fingers or a spoon. Pour the mixture from Step 1 underneath and around the skin. Step 4, cram the poultry seasoning and about 1/2 cup of sage and rosemary sprigs into the cavity of the turkey.
Tie the turkey's legs with a kitchen string and tuck in the wings. Cover the pan with parchment paper and aluminum foil. Continuing with Step 5, roast your turkey in the preheated oven for 3.5 hours, until the meat is 75 degrees Celsius.
Step 6, carefully pour the stock from the pan into a shallow bowl. Skim the turkey fat from the juice; reserve about 2 tablespoons of fat. Cover again.
Step 7, make the gravy as our golden bird rests. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add flour and stir for about another 5 minutes. Whisk in 4 cups of stock and fat until it is smooth, removing any foam that appears. Keep stirring, you can add balsamic vinegar for flavour. Continuing to whisk, simmer for about 10 minutes until the gravy is thickened. To top it all off, add sage to the gravy mix and season with salt and black pepper.
Congratulations! You've just made a classic roast turkey with gravy for your Thanksgiving dinner. Your guests are sure to gobble down every last bite. Have a bountiful Thanksgiving!
