This is a story that begins in the summer of 1922 in the United States.
As you see, I, Nick Carraway, a Yale graduate, moves from Midwest to live and work in New York City.
I rent a small house in West Egg, and become a neighbor of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious man I know only by name.
My narrative truly unfolds when I make the journey to East Egg to dine with my cousin Daisy Buchanan and her wealthy husband, Tom Buchanan.
During dinner, Tom receives a phone call from his mistress. His affair casts a shadow over our gathering.
At last, I leave, feeling confused because Daisy shows no willingness to divorce.
Upon my return to West Egg, I catch sight of Jay Gatsby on his lawn, his arms stretches out towards a distant green light across the bay. He vanishes as quickly as he appears, leaving me with no opportunity to make his acquaintance.
Later, while accompanying Tom on a train ride to the city, he insists we get off at the Valley of Ashes to meet his mistress Myrtle Wilson.
Myrtle is wife to George Wilson, a garage owner.
Tom secretly takes Myrtle away to Manhattan which is far from East Egg and Valley of Ashes.
And I am invited to their apartment for a party.
The evening reaches a breaking point when Tom hits Myrtle just because she repeatedly calls out Daisy’s name. The party ends, and I am alone on the train back to West Egg.
All these things linger over my mind, and I feel unprecedentedly confused.
